E3 2010 - Professor Layton and the Unwound Future confirmed (Posted June 21, 2010 at 12:14)
The name was trademarked by Level-5 a couple of weeks ago and it's now been confirmed that Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is the third title in the Professor Layton series.

Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke, receive a confounding letter - from Luke 10 years in the future. But the message inside is even more troubling: London of the future is in disarray, and the only person who can help set things right is Professor Layton.

  • More than 165 new puzzles weave seamlessly into the storyline. Players will be challenged with fun, brain-teasing logic puzzles and riddles, and even new types of puzzles.
  • This game features significantly more hand-drawn animated sequences and voice acting than the previous installment of the series.
  • Players who are still stumped with a puzzle after three subtle hints can select the new "superhint" option to point them toward a solution.
  • As with previous incarnations of the franchise, weekly downloadable puzzles will be available after launch for a limited time.

To many fans' surprise, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future wasn't the only game in the series to make an appearance at E3. The fifth title in the series, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, was revealed to be a Nintendo 3DS title: the game is due for release in Japan this autumn, so it's unknown if it'll be released as a 3DS title upon its release over there. It might yet be a DS title, but it all depends on when the 3DS launches in the region.

That title won't be published by Nintendo, however: we understand that it'll be published by the developer, Level-5, worldwide, as all Professor Layton titles have been published by them in Japan thus far.
